The Institute for Applied Remote Sensing is looking for an

Expert in remote sensing applications for air quality monitoring

Background
The Institute for Applied Remote Sensing develops remote sensing applications for the Alps and other mountainous areas, addressing current environmental problems in the context of global change.
The institute is currently starting a project, which aims at developing methods for monitoring the concentration and the spatial distribution of particulate matter in mountain regions by means of near real time satellite data. The envisaged approach will integrate point measurements from the existing observation network and expand its capabilities to an area wide assessment.

Tasks

  • Test, validate and improve an existing near real time process chain for mapping PM10 and PM2.5 from MODIS.
  • Establish an operational link between Earth observation (EO) approaches and an existing real-time in-situ network for mountainous regions.
  • Build upon and expand cooperation with external partners in the field of meteorology and physics of the atmosphere.
  • Supervise and support the integration of meteorological methods and models into the process chain.
  • Explore and evaluate the opportunities of other existing and upcoming sensors in the field of air quality (e.g. MSG, NOAA, …).
  • Explore and evaluate the potential of MODIS near real time applications and the analysis of MODIS time series also for other applications e.g. in the field of snow and vegetation monitoring.

Qualifications
Essential

  • Master, diploma or comparable degree in physics, meteorology or geo-sciences with a strong background in the relevant field
  • One year of work experience
  • Profound experience in remote sensing techniques and applications with medium resolution optical data
  • Experience in modelling atmospheric parameters at regional level
  • Very good English skills
  • Team skills and flexibility

Desirable

  • PhD in a geo-scientific or other relevant field
  • Experience in in-situ atmospheric measurement techniques including Laser scan
  • Experience in project management and scientific project proposal writing
  • good German and / or Italian skills

We offer

  • An interesting, highly responsible job in a young international team
  • The opportunity for further qualification, including PhD
  • Access to EURAC's numerous scientific and cultural facilities and events
  • An attractive working place in a vivid city in the heart of the Alps with endless opportunities for skiing, hiking, climbing…

The contract will be issued for two years in a first instance with the option for extension at the end of this period.

How to apply
Interested candidates should submit their application in English (CV, publication list and cover letter) until 16.05.2008 to the address below. Electronic application (PDF) is appreciated.
