Dalai Lama
The visit of the Dalai Lama at EURAC is the highlight of the long standing relations between the South Tyrolean Research Institute and Tibet. Researchers of the EURAC have supported and advised the Tibetan government in exile especially concerning autonomy since the nineties.

The Dalai Lama is the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetans. The current (14th) Dalai Lama was born as a farmer's son by the name of Lhamo Dhondrub in the Tibetan province of Amdo on the 6th of July 1935. |

At two and a half years of age he was recognized as the 14th incarnation in the lineage of the Dalai Lamas. In July 1993, the Tibetan government also recognized him as the official 14th Dalai Lama. He received the new name of Tenzin Gyatso. On 22 February 1940, only four and a half years old, the 14th Dalai Lama acceded to the Sengtri, the throne of the lion. He took over the spiritual and political leadership of his people at the age of 15.

The Chinese occupation compelled him to go into exil in Dharamsala, India, from where he has maintained governance in exile since 1959. His tireless dedication to the self-determination of the Tibetans earned him the Peace Nobel Prize in 1989. |
