Project area: the application area of the Alpine Convention

The international convention for the protection of the Alps and promotion of sustainable development was signed in 1991 by the member states, Germany (DE), France (FR), Italy (IT), Liechtenstein (LI), Monaco (MC), Austria (AT), Switzerland (CH), and Slovenia (SLO).
The application area of the Alpine convention is the basis for the study of agrarian structures in the Project AGRALP (
Map). The application area was delimited on municipality level in 2004 by the Institute for Regional Development (1). The delimitation was based on the convention areas recommended by the signatory states in Annex 1 of the Framework Convention, and on the Map. This Alpine delimitation includes 5,964 municipalities. The population living within the convention area numbers 13.6 million in a total area of 190,879 km².
