Key Figures of the Convention Area Germany
The German Convention area is located in the triangle between Munich, Salzburg and Lindau at Lake Constance. The natural space of the German Alps belongs to the northern part of the Alps with Central European characteristics. Politically, the German Convention area is located solely in two administrative districts, Swabia and Upper Bavaria in the federal state of Bavaria.
The Convention area comprises all NUTS-3 regions (districts) with a share in the Alps, i.e. 13 districts with a total area of 11,103 kmē and 287 municipalities. For this reason, the German Convention area includes several regions that are located outside the actual Alpine space. This also becomes obvious in a comparison of the Convention area and the Bavarian regional development plan (RDP), according to which the Alpine recreation area comprises only 101 municipalities and 5,400 kmē. At 3%, a very insignificant proportion of the total German area is located in the Alps, which is why Bavaria (NUTS 2) is included in all statistical analyses.

Germany's proportion of the Alps is limited to the very southern tip of Bavaria. Regarding its area and population, the German Alpine Convention area has almost no significance at all for Germany. However, relative terms do not represent the big picture: In absolute terms, Germany's proportion of the Alps of 3% (11,103 kmē) is larger than the Slovenian Convention area (40% of the entire Slovenian area).
