Key Figures of the Convention Area France
The French Convention area stretches from Thonon-les-Bains at Lake Geneva in the North to Cannes at the Côte d'Azur in the South of France and comprises two regions and nine departments: the region of Rhône-Alpes with the four departments Drôme, Isôre, Haute-Savoie and Savoie as well as the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur with the five departments Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Alpes-Maritimes, Var, Vaucluse and Hautes-Alpes.
With regards to its area (41,000 km²) and its population (2.5 million inhabitants), the French Convention area ranks third in the Alpine Convention after Austria and Italy. The area comprises 1,749 municipalities.

In size, France is one the biggest members of the AIn size, France is one the biggest members of the Alpine convention. Together, France (21%), Austria (29%) and Italy (27%) hold almost 80% of the total Convention area.

Although France, accounting for 21% of the total Alpine region, is one of the biggest members of the Alpine Convention, the proportion of its territory in the Alps accounts for barely 8% of the country's total area. The proportion of its citizens living in the Alps is even more insignificant: one in 25 French citizens live in the Alps (by way of comparison, one in four Swiss citizens live in the Swiss Alpine region).
