Key Figures of the Convention Area Italy
The Italian Convention area comprises seven regions, three of which are autonomous (Trentino-Alto Adige/Bolzano-South Tyrol, Aosta Valley and Friuli-Venezia Giulia), and 23 provinces. The autonomous region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Bolzano-South Tyrol consists of two autonomous provinces, Trento and Bolzano-South Tyrol. While most regions and provinces are only partly located in the Alpine Convention area, the autonomous region of Aosta Valley, the provinces of Sondrio (Lombardy) and Belluno (Veneto) and the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano-South Tyrol are located entirely in the Convention area.
 The Italian Convention area has a size of 52.000 km˛ and a population of 4,1 Million inhabitants
With an area of around 52,000 km˛, Italy's proportion of the Convention area accounts for 27%, the second largest proportion after Austria. The Italian Convention area has 1756 municipalities (30%) and around 4.1 million inhabitants (2000).

Compared with other Alpine countries such as Austria and Switzerland, the area and population of the Italian Convention area account for a relatively small proportion of the total Italian territory. The convention area is comprised of less than 20% of the total area and 10% of the population of Italy.
