The National Alpine Convention Areas

On the following pages, we would like to give you an insight into the heterogeneity of the Alps, a "relief region of variety" (Birkenhauer, 2002). Even though its morphological appearance conveys the image of a homogeneous relief region, the Alps offer a wide variety of geographical, social, cultural and economic differences. The pages and country maps are aimed at illustrating the range of these various facts and providing a broader knowledge about the seven Convention areas. By presenting informative summaries, thematic maps, tables and diagrams on selected agricultural and demographic aspects, we primarily pursue the following two objectives:

a) Illustration of the development and current status in the national Convention areas and

b) Comparison of the Convention areas with the total development in the Alpine countries and in the Convention area.

These analyses provide the opportunity to identify the differences between individual Convention areas on the one hand and between these and the entire Convention area on the other hand. In addition, a comparison between the values of the Convention areas and their respective countries allows for an interpretation and evaluation of the development and the situation in the Convention areas. Statistical analyses help to review whether the objectives of the Alpine Convention were achieved.

One more note regarding the demarcation of the individual territories of the Alpine Convention: The Convention areas are based on national provisions or, in cases where demarcations were not specified on a municipal level, on the suggestion of the Institute.
