Introduction
The Carpathian Convention on the protection and sustainable development of the Carpathian mountain region has been in existence since 2003, when it was signed by the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, the Slovak Republic and Ukraine.
The Carpathian Project, within the framework of the EU CADSES programme, is aimed at making a scientific base available for the implementation of the Convention's objectives. The Carpathian Project carries out a complete assessment of requirements, as well as of strengths and weaknesses of the Carpathian region. The typical limitations of mountain regions, as a consequence of economic changes and European integration, are assessed. The project develops strategies and proposes opportunities in terms of further development based on the region's potentials while safeguarding its natural and cultural heritage.
The study area covers the mountain regions of the Convention's territory. It also includes the bordering lowlands (as depicted on the map below).
Contents and objectives
The Institute for Regional Development and Location Management is in charge of creating and analysing the information base as per Workpackage 1. This includes collecting, harmonising and mapping the data, which is covering mainly socio-economic topics. As for the different administrative levels, statistical data regarding 10 topics is collected down to the level of municipalities. Various indicators about population, demographic structure, labour market and tourism are represented on thematic maps for the entire territory of the Carpathian Project at NUTS level 2 or 3 for at least 2 time periods. The maps and the results of the analysis are made available through a web portal targeted at the Project partners and at the general public alike. Additionally a publication of a Carpathian Atlas is planned. The Atlas will further analyse and explain the data collected, which will be linked to causes documented in the literature (for more details see the Carpathian Atlas link).
