MONITRAF - Monitoring of road traffic related effects in the Alpine Space and common measures
- Contents and objectives - Approach - Project partners - Links
MONITRAF analyses the effects of road traffic in the Alpine Space – precisely along the four severely threatened transalpine crossings Frejus, Montblanc, Gotthard and Brenner – and develops measures for a common transport strategy. The project is co-financed by the European Union within the scope of the INTERREG III B Alpine Space Programme.
Background
Road traffic through the Alps, particularly freight transport, is constantly increasing while railways are continually losing market share. This development takes place in an extremely sensitive area with pronounced responses to the effects of road traffic, especially air pollution and noise.

Contents and objectives
Beside the analysis of road traffic related effects the project analyses the development in each partner region and establishes the exchange about consequences of the developments. Especially this exchange and the cooperation between the regions could contribute significantly to more future cooperation among the Alpine regions to work together for a common transport strategy and prevent problems simply being shifted from one corridor to another. Consequently the objective of the project to develop common measures in order to avoid negative impacts of road traffic and to contribute to a sustainable transport strategy in the Alpine region can be implemented. The project does not want to end with the development of common measures, but also prepare their implementation. Therefore the interregional cooperation has to be developed to such an extent that it lasts even when the project is finished.
top Approach
The project consists of different modules, shown in the following picture.

Detailed information about the project are available on the MONITRAF website.
