The IMA Coordination Unit, on behalf of the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea organized in 2005 the first edition of "Scientific Workshop On Mountain Mobility and Transport – SWOMM", devoted to the major scientific research projects concerning sustainable mobility and transport in mountain areas. The workshop was held on October 6th 2005 in EURAC. It is part of the INTERREG IIIB AlpFrail Project and of the Policy and Law initiative of the Mountain Partnership.
Mobility and transport experts from the public and private sector took part in the SWOMM project and shared information and experiences concerning the questions linked to the transalpine traffic management. Starting from the available transport scientific research findings, the meeting has promoted new synergies and exchanges of best practices among experts involved in sustainable development applied to mobility and transport in the mountain areas.
Cutting-edge scientific projects concerning the following thematic areas have been put forward: • Shifting from freight road haulage to rail transport • alpine corridors • international aspects of alpine transport • incentives for environmentally friendly means of transport • strategies for an effective transport system • traffic management in the Alps • impact of traffic on the Alpine environment
The IMA Coordination Unit, on the initiative by the Italian Ministry of Environment and Territory, has taken care of the publication of the workshop proceedings.
In the wake of the success of this first meeting, UdC IMA, in collaboration with the Committee for the Centenary of the Simplon Tunnel and on behalf of the ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea organized the SWOMM 2006, that took place on the 8th of September, 2006 in Domodossola at the DOMO 2 Station – Beura Cardezza in the framework of the celebrations of the Centenary of the Simplon Tunnel, and has been attended by experts and officers of institutions involved in mountain mobility and transport at local, national and international levels from all the Alpine Countries, who discussed the results of SWOMM 2005 at the Round Table.
