1996-2000: NEPT (Neuro-Epidemiology Project of South Tyrol) The core of this project was made up of an expert network of general practitioners and specialists in neurology from various parts of South Tyrol, who examined the frequency and distribution of Parkinson's syndrome in South Tyrol. In the context of this investigation, several geographic and family "clusters" were evidenced. Further research has demonstrated that portions of the South Tyrolean population suggest the previous existence of an isolated population. Based on these findings, genetics emerged as a principle point of research, alongside epidemiology. As a "spin-off" the genomic health care program "GenNova" was started at the EURAC in 2001 .

November 2000: Convening of an expert panel, consisting of local and international scientists, for the evaluation of the feasibility of the "GenNova" research program. |

December 2000: The Health Services Council of the Autonomous Province of Bozen - South Tyrol appoints a commission to appraise the research proposal.
January 2001: Agreement between the EURAC and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol.
2001-2003: GenNova research program at the EURAC After the Province's Health Service Department agrees to finance the program for a three-year period, partial financing by the Südtiroler Sparkasse foundation and the appointment of Dr Peter P. Pramstaller from the Central Hospital Bolzano to the EURAC initiated the GenNova program in December 2001. September 2002: A five-member core research team works on the GenNova Program. October 2002: An officially certified molecular-genetic laboratory starts operating.
2004: GenNova becomes the EURAC-Institute of Genetic Medicine.
