Teacher Training
On 29 August 2003, the Genetic Medicine Department organized an advanced training course for natural history and biology teachers from middle- and high schools: participating teachers developed insight on the theoretical bases of genetics in this the one-day session, and had the chance to perform practical experiments. In the theoretical portion, the implications of genetics for modern medicine, South Tyrol's importance in genetic research, the identification of microisolated groups in areas with relatively homogeneous populations, and the significance of genealogy in the genetic research were illustrated. In the laboratory, DNA was extracted from blood tests and the PCR (polymerase chain reaction), a revolutionary technique by which DNA can be made visible, was explained. The participants were able to personally try this technique.
