One thing that has always distinguished the research department is the support to the Terminology Commission. The historical and legal basis of the Commission is stated in the decree conferring the German and Italian languages the same status within the Province of Bolzano-South Tyrol. In this area, the official status of both languages grants the German citizens the right to use their native language when dealing with public administration and in judicial procedures. To this end, a Joint Commission of Terminology was established to determine, modernize and validate the German legal, administrative and technical terminology used in public offices and the judiciary body.
In its role as Secretariat of the Terminology Commission, the EURAC carries out the propaedeutic job to the normation phase (consisting of the development of terminographic entries) and manages the organization of the meetings of the commission of experts and the Joint Commission.
