Asia
Social discrimination, cultural assimilation, political suppression and disfranchisement, ethnic cleansing and military occupation are for many minorities in Asia part of daily reality. Nevertheless only a small number of these conflicts such as the one in Kashmir or in Sri Lanka gain public attention in the media. Conflicts between religious minorities lead to bloody pogroms, indigenous people are expelled from their traditional lands and an increasing number of small regional languages are becoming extinct.
Since the beginning of the nineties the Institute for Minority Rights has been consulting the Tibetian government in exile on minority rights issues and the notion of autonomy. Out of this activity many networks have been established which play now an integral part in our new European-Asian exchange programme.
