Introduction
In recent decades most member states of the European Union have experienced a marked increase in the number of foreign nationals residing on their territory. This situation poses challenges for governments and public authorities across Europe who must attempt to integrate foreign residents into the community in which they live. Integration policies are crucial in the fight against discrimination and racism and to achieve social and economic cohesion. Social inclusion is the key to making third country nationals (TCNs) equal participants in the society in which they now reside.
