 | SHORT DESCRIPTION | | | The Italian Ministry for the Environment and Territory, holding the Presidency of the Alpine Convention, hosted the International Meeting “Sharing the Experience – Mountain Sustainable Development in the Carpathians and in the Alps” from 17th to 19th June 2002 in the City of Bolzano, Italy.
The meeting, promoted within the framework of the 2002 – International Year of the Mountains, organized by the United Nations Environment Programme, Regional Office for Europe (UNEP/ROE), in cooperation with the European Academy of Bozen/Bolzano (EURAC), was attended by representatives of several international as well as Carpathian Non-Governmental Organizations.
The meeting recognized that the experience of the Alpine Convention is a unique existing tool for the sustainable development of mountain areas worldwide, and as such can serve as a potential model for cooperation in the Carpathian mountain region. Furthermore, the meeting recommended that the cooperation for the protection and sustainable management of the Carpathians be addressed through a Framework Carpathian Convention, to be developed and adopted by the Carpathian countries.
The Carpathian regional cooperation initiative is currently lead by the Government of Ukraine, and it is expected that significant outcome will be presented to the Ministerial Conference “Environment for Europe”, to be held in Kyiv, Ukraine, in May next year. |
