SHORT DESCRIPTION

Based on the results of the preceding DIAMONT work packages WP5 and WP6, WP7 aimed at identifying and selecting indicators that describe and evaluate the basic issues of sustainable regional development in the Alps. In order to create a solid foundation for a transparent thematic elaboration of indicators, a conceptual framework was established that was structured according to the main trends of regional development, the dimensions of sustainability, as well as the phenomena that specify single processes as part of the main trends. In the end result, the indicator work focused on the main trend: "urbanization – local centres and their hinterland between competition and cooperation". A pilot application of the proposed indicators targeted the German Alpine area. This test was supported by cluster analyses that differentiated various types of urbanization at the level of municipalities and so-called 'urban areas'.
