How can regional development be steered in a manner that respects the objectives of sustainable development? This has been the major question behind the efforts of the work presented in this volume, which sums up the main activities carried out within Work Package 9 of the project DIAMONT. The work concentrated on two major issues:
- The identification and characterisation of land resource management as an important issue for regional development in the Alps; and,
- The collection of a set of instruments capable of supporting sustainable land resource management. To structure this collection, a typology of development instruments was defined and a database created.
