As a laboratory and statistical geneticist in Australia, Scott Melville has worked on a variety of animal-based studies including kangaroos, jellyfish, dogs and snails. His research highlight has been the discovery of the gene causing fatal Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis in Border Collies, which is often known as Battens disease when the same genetic disease occurs in children. More recently, he works on the identification of genes that are involved in determining a person's response to human diseases and medical conditions, including bone mineral density. Scott joined the institute in October 2007.
