The Institute for Biomedicine at Eurac Research is conducting research in the fields of biomedicine, with a focus on neurodegeneration and cardiovascular medicine, integrating genetics and epidemiology data with functional characterization of molecular disease mechanisms with the view to clinical application of research findings.
As part of the focus of the Translational Genomics research group and the Molecular Neurodegeneration group, we are searching for genetic variants that contribute to onset and/or progression of disease of the central nervous system (e.g. PD, epilepsy, pain etc). We are building on such genetic data to functionally investigate specific genes and their protein products. With this information, we establish experimental models (e.g. induced pluripotent stem cells, iPSCs, derived from PD patients) that mimic pathogenic processes with the aim of identifying molecular pathways that are relevant for PD pathogenesis. The selected candidates will carry out cellular and molecular biology experiments, immunofluorescence, end-point cellular assays, RNA and protein level analysis focused on the characterization of intracellular pathways involved in misfolded protein aggregation and degradation (e.g. autophagy) and mitochondrial function.
