The Institute for Renewable energy of Eurac Research is involved in several research projects in the field of district heating and cooling systems and urban excess heat recovery solutions. In this context, planning tools capable of computing the performance of waste heat recovery plant are needed, enabling decision makers to select suitable applications to be set up.
The Master Thesis will focus on contributing to the development of a software tool for the performance assessment of low-temperature district heating and cooling systems, including heat exchange substations. Both hydraulic and heat transfer models are included in the tool.
The simulation results will be used to assess how decentralized excess heat recovery substations impact on the system hydraulics and on the energetic and environmental performance of the district heating and cooling system.
This internship will be part of the Life+ LIFE4HEATRECOVERY project coordinated by Eurac Research and will be carried out in close collaboration with the senior researcher responsible for the development. The foreseen duration of the activity is about 6 months including thesis writing in English.
It is expected that the candidate will:
- implement models of district heating and cooling networks;
- run simulations to assess district heating and cooling networks when different waste heat sources are integrated;
- organize and report the results in a structured document written in English.
Data for the implementation of the networks will be made available by EURAC, including information on the needed control logics.
- Basic programming skills, in any language, and interest towards programming;
- Good understanding of hydraulics and thermodynamics;
- Knowledge of oral and written English language;
- Knowledge in the field of district heating and cooling is a plus;
- Knowledge in the field of heat pumps is a plus;
- Knowledge of one or more of the Matlab, Python, and Modelica languages is a plus;
