Internship for a Master Thesis in the field of laboratory test of heat pump systems

The performance of heat pump systems is strongly influenced by the variation of the boundary conditions. Dynamic boundary conditions are caused especially when renewable energies are employed, due to the complexity of system' architecture, the control strategies, the discontinuity of sources availability. The behaviour of those systems is quite far from that obtained under a stationary characterization. As consequence, the performance assessment of such thermal systems is not simple.

The Institute for Renewable Energy at Eurac Research has developed a new dynamic test method. The aim is to evaluate the seasonal performance of thermal systems with a short test sequence that represent realistic working conditions.

The developed methods and the applications developed will be implemented in the new laboratory "Heat Pumps Lab" of Eurac (HPL). The student will design the experiment, set up and run the tests and the analyze the results.

This work will be carried out in close collaboration with the senior researcher responsible for the development of the test methodology. The foreseen duration of the activity is about 6 months including thesis writing.

Tasks:

It is expected that the candidate will:

  • Review the openly available literature
  • Set up and run laboratory tests to study the system performance under a range of dynamic boundary conditions
  • Analyze the results and organize them in a structured document written in English

Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of thermodynamics and heating & cooling systems
  • Basic knowledge of Labiview programming language
  • Knowledge of oral and written English

We offer:

  • The opportunity to work on a master thesis dealing with an innovative topic, contributing in the development of innovative test methods;
  • The opportunity to work in a young international team in a fast-growing sector;
  • Working conditions which allow professional growth and know-how acquisition with career opportunity as applied researcher;
  • A surrounding offering a high quality of life.

How to apply:

Interested candidates should submit their application (CV, cover letter and further relevant documents) by 15.11.2019 to the following address:
