PhD position in “Runoff regime seasonal forecasts by integration of Earth Observation data and hydrological models through a machine learning approach"


The Institute for Earth Observation of Eurac Research in collaboration with the Department of Land, Environment, Agriculture and Forestry of the university of Padova invites applications for a PhD position in “Integration between hydrological models, remote sensing and climate data for snow parameter estimation and seasonal run-off forecast”.

The research activity is in the field of snow hydrology, focusing on alpine catchments with a strong snow run-off contribute. The goal of the research is to demonstrate how the use of improved climate forecasts integrated with hydrological models and remote sensing data can add practical and economic value to decision-making processes and outcomes, primarily in the energy sector, but also in the water and touristic sectors. The satellite data that will be considered for the research activity will mainly include but are not limited to the images acquired by the ESA Sentinel mission. Machine learning will be the most relevant technique to be considered for the integration of the hydrological, climate and remote sensing data. The expected outcome of the research activity will be the development of innovative approaches for snow water equivalent estimation, snow melting, and run-off forecast.

Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in scientific disciplines (please see the requirements of the LERH PhD Program at http://www.unipd.it/en/research/doctoral-degrees-phd-programmes/phd-programmes-calls-and-admissions) with a strong background in hydrology, remote sensing, and statistical analysis is required. The working language is English. Good knowledge of programming languages such as python and/or Matlab is an asset.

The Ph.D. student will work mainly at the Institute for Earth Observation of Eurac Research, Bolzano, Italy. In addition, some activities will be carried out at the Department of Land, Environment, Agriculture, and Forestry, University of Padova.
