Post-lauream/master student Biology/Biotechnology for the investigation of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy

The position is open for post lauream students with a master's degree in science (biology, biotechnology or related fields) for a period of 6-10 months (graduated not more than 12 months before the start of the internship).

The position is also open to students attending Masters of Science in Biotechnology, Biology or related disciplines in the biomedicine field, who want to perform 9-12 months experimental thesis work.

Description of the project:

The Institute for Biomedicine at Eurac Research in Bolzano is conducting research in the fields of biomedicine, with a focus on neurodegeneration and cardiovascular medicine, integrating genetics and epidemiology data with functional characterization of molecular disease mechanisms with the view to clinical application of research findings.

As part of the focus of the Biology of Cardiac Health and Disease Group, we are investigating the molecular mechanisms leading to cardiac sudden death, in particular arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. In order to investigate the pathophysiological changes occurring during arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (CMs) obtained from affected individuals are used as in vitro model for molecular biology and electrophysiology experiments.

The student will gain technical and scientific experience, and will personally deal with literature search, experimental work, and data evaluation.

Specifically, major molecular and cellular biology techniques will include:

  • iPSCs culture and cardiomyogenic differentiation
  • iPSC-derived CMs enrichment and culture
  • Electrophysiology
  • Real Time PCR
  • Western Blot
  • Immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy

  • Molecular and cellular biology bases
  • Experience in cell culture work as well as in basic molecular laboratory techniques
  • Previous laboratory experience in electrophysiology and/or in iPSC culture and differentiation will be an advantage
  • Good knowledge of English language
  • Knowledge of either German or Italian language is an advantage

We offer:

The Biology of Cardiac Health and Disease Group is offering one position for a 6-12 months project in the laboratory. The beginning of the internship will be discussed with the selected candidate. An internship compensation is foreseen.
