Short description of the position
The Eurac Institute for Earth Observation develops methods, tools, products and services for the Alps and other mountainous areas, addressing current problems of social-ecological systems in the context of global change. One specific task is the development and implementation of risk and vulnerability assessments scrutinising the potential impacts of natural hazards and climate change. As part of the research area ‘Mountains’ our institute strives for improved assessments of the interactions of environment and society in mountain regions.
The candidate further develop our research line on natural hazards with a focus on monitoring and analysing gravitational processes, particularly within the context of climate change. The candidate will take a senior position within our institute including the supervision of junior staff as well as leading and acquiring projects. Tasks:
- Bring forward the Institute’s research line on Natural Hazard through methodological and applied research, publications and project acquisition related to the Alps and mountain areas worldwide.
- Initiate, implement and supervise activities related to monitoring and analysis of gravitational processes based on the integration of data from a variety of sources (satellite-based, airborne, in-situ, deterministic and statistical models).
- Providing methodological expertise in statistical data analysis for climate change impact analysis and decision support in the context of risk and vulnerability determination.
- PhD + min. 2 years scientific working experience in the fields of natural hazards and related processes or climate change impact on the physical environment (desirable in mountain regions).
- Education in geology, environmental science, geo-ecology, physical geography or similar.
- Experience in scientific data analysis using statistical and / or data integration methodologies.
- Demonstrated ability to write peer reviewed publications.
- Experience in project management and fund raising preferably in an international context.
- Very good command of spoken and written English.
- Ability in team working, good communication with users and other international partners.
- Knowledge in remote sensing techniques (particularly InSAR).Experience in GPS field campaigns and or early warning systemsWork experience in the European Alps.
- Interest in and the ability to carry out fieldwork in mountain study sites.·
- Written and oral command of one of the two main languages spoken in South Tyrol: German and Italian.
