Researcher within the field of Big Earth Observation Data Science

Eurac Research is an interdisciplinary research centre located in Bolzano, Italy. At the Institute for Earth Observation (EO) we do research on monitoring of environmental parameter and processes with EO and climate data in mountain regions and are hosting a huge amount of earth observation data for the alpine region. The person we are looking for will support our group "Advanced Computing for Earth Observation" in bringing scientific concepts and algorithms in the field of Big EO Data into operation.



  • Development of tools and application for earth observation and geospatial tasks
  • Development of efficient processing chains out of prototype code, including approaches such as parallelization or cloud computing
  • Processing of remote sensing and geo-spatial data sets with a focus on time series.
  • Validation of processing chains and products
  • Documentation of software and code
  • Maintenance and support to researchers on specific scientific SW




  • Degree in geo-informatics, computer science, informatics engineering or similar qualification
  • Two years of proven experience in programming in the GEO or Earth Observation domain
  • Experience in remote sensing methods and software including image pre-processing, classification, statistical analysis and machine learning
  • Deep knowledge in programming languages such as: Python, R, Java and/or C/C++
  • Experience working with a Linux environment and command-line (shell)
  • Ability in team working, good communication, motivation to learn and flexibility
  • Very good English (spoken and written). German and/or Italian skills are highly appreciated


  • Knowledge of EO software tools such as Sentinel or Orfeo Toolboxes
  • Knowledge of GIS Systems (GRASS software suite, QuantumGIS, ArcGIS, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Databases for raster management such as open data cube or rasdaman
  • Knowledge of container-based cluster computing (docker, openshift, kubernetis, etc.)
  • Data analysis and visualization skills for spatial and temporal data
