Citizens' participation in politics: analysis and good examples from the Alpine Arc
Our federalist experts are studying institutional innovation and participative democracy in the Alpine Arc. They do this within the project "Governance and Youth and the Alps" (GaYA), funded by the Alpine Space program, along with 8 associations and institutions from France, Italy, Germany, Slovenia and Austria.
Now our researchers, together with other partners, have published a comparative report showing the results of their analysis regarding democratic innovation in the Alpine region. On the one hand, they have gathered experiences and initiatives of participation already in place. On the other hand, they have studied the legal frameworks that govern or give foundation to the demonstrations of participative democracy in the Alpine countries.

Among the several findings, researchers emphasize that what affects the positive outcome of a participative democracy path is not so much the legal framework or the size of the territorial entity, but the formation of a "participative" culture of a particular place and the will of political actors to engage in the effective implementation of a participative democratic process.

Moreover, the team of researchers produced 6 fact sheets depicting positive and innovative participative experiences identified during their analysis. Each fact sheet provides two best practises of participative democracy in the areas of urban regeneration, territorial development, public spending, environment, youth policies, and mobility.

The target audience of the above fact sheets are primarily decision-makers and policy-makers aiming to introduce a participative mechanism in their own Region or City.

The report and fact sheets can be consulted free of charge online, in 5 languages, from our website
