  ELDIT stands for "Elektronisches Lernerwörterbuch Deutsch-Italienisch" ("Electronic learners' dictionary for German and Italian").The electronic language learning programme has been under development by the EURAC since 1999.

At this point, it includes a dictionary with a basic vocabulary of approximately 3500 words per language as well as some 800 learner's texts, and is accessible to all users free of charge via the internet: ELDIT.

ELDIT is a dictionary which was developed expressly for the computer medium and contains important information for the language learner that one doesn't always find in conventional dictionaries: 
- simple definitions, sentence examples and translations,
- typical and frequently used collocations with translations and numerous examples,
- idioms, formulaic expressions and sayings,
- word families, groups of words all possessing a common root,
- diagrams for words with similar meanings,
- inflection tables,
- interactive images,
- audio files,
- multiple search possibilities (spelling checker, multi-word search, search for inflected words...),
- a didactical grammar.

Furthermore, ELDIT contains texts from South Tyrol's Bilingualism Examination, together with the pertaining questions: 
- arranged according to topic; 
- the words in each text are linked directly with the learner's dictionary.
A series of texts are provided with model answers to the questions.

NB: The materials of the ELDIT platform refer to the Bilingualism examination in the form in force until 31/12/2013. Althuogh the examination procedure has been changes, the materials available on the ELDIT website are still a precious source for language learning and language practising.  

Research:

In the frame of the ELDIT VI subproject a PhD was carried out in collaboration with the University of Trento on "Semantic relations in lexicography, linguistics and cognition science". Gerhard Kremers PhD project aimed at developing a method for the extraction of semantic relations for given concepts from text corpora. The study concentrated on those instances which are most relevant for native speakers and language learners of Italian and German from a cognitive point of view. The extracted instances create a resource for dictionary expansion, especially for ELDIT, which can thus be further completed with information on lexical relations.

Background

Starting point: 
South Tyrol's Bilingualism Examination

ELDIT was originally initiated to make all preparation materials for the Bilingualism Examination available to the population of South Tyrol both free of charge and in an easy-to-use form. All of the examination materials (texts, vocabulary banks and general information) were completely redesigned in the course of the project. 
The dictionary and texts are, however, not only a means of independent preparation for the Bilingualism Examination, but are also suitable for other education and reference purposes.

An interdisciplinary team of linguists and computer scientists is responsible for the development of ELDIT. The work falls into a relatively young branch of research within the field of foreign language didactics, which is concerned with the development of computer-assisted multimedia language teaching software for self-instruction. In addition, innovative directions in the field of educational lexicography have been explored in the course of the project.

Project History

ELDIT is a research prototype, and as such, it is under constant improvement and development. The overall project consists of several subprojects: 
- under subproject ELDIT I, the basis for the electronic dictionary was developed; 
ELDIT II saw the fusion of the dictionary with a body of texts, as well as the development of interactive diagrams with semantically related words;
- through ELDIT-AMOS (an Interreg IIIA project), various morphosyntactic aspects could be merged into the system (including graphic presentation of verb conjugation, inflection tables, etc.);
- within the subproject ELDIT III the following modules were developed: a) the completion of a didactical grammar/explanations of linguistic terms;  b) the supply of multimedia elements for the ELDIT dictionary (illustrations and sound files);  c) support and model answers for a selected set of texts for the Bilingualism Examination;
- ELDIT IV foresaw the development of an authoring tool and of interactive exercises. Furthermore, an overall reengineering was necessary, which allows an easier integration of new modules in ELDIT in the future;
- within ELDIT V a prototype of a dictionary writing system was developed and studies on word sense disambiguation were carried out;
- in the frame of the ELDIT VI subproject a PhD was carried out in collaboration with the University of Trento on "Semantic relations in lexicography, linguistics and cognition science".

Technical Aspects

ELDIT is an ongoing language learning project in which recent language methods and technologies are used to implement innovative didactic ideas.

The basic architecture of ELDIT is a client-server model making use of standard Internet and WWW protocols. The server is implemented using Java Servlet technology, and runs on any Web Server that supports the Java Servlet API.  Java Servlet technology is a powerful and easy-to-use technology for the dynamic creation of HTML pages.  On the client side, the dictionary can be accessed by any Web-Browser.  The current version of ELDIT supports Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, and Opera.

As a uniform data and knowledge representation formalism, we use the XML language. XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a meta-markup language that allows the definition of specific tag sets that break a document into parts. Such tag sets are defined in a so-called document type definition (DTD), and specify the structure of an XML document or data set. Since an XML tag set explicitly describes the different parts of a document, XML documents can easily be shared and reused among different applications. Further advantages are the clear separation of content, structure, and presentation, ease of use, and the free availability of many XML tools and utilities.

When a user retrieves a particular dictionary entry, the client sends a request to the server. The corresponding data is searched for in the ELDIT database, and an HTML-page is generated according to specific personal learning situations. This approach allows great flexibility, since presentation and organization of the content elements change in different learning situations according to linguistic and didactic demands.
