Best Practices of Minority Protection in Central Europe (MIMI)

The aim of this project was to identify best practices of minority protection through a comparative study of the situation of autochthonous minorities in Austria, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia and Romania. The project provided a detailed assessment of six key areas for minority protection (i.e. culture, language use, media, education, economic and political participation) and highlighted the discrepancies between law and practice in Central Europe. Moreover, the analysis revealed the close links between the six key area and, therefore, the need for comprehensive minority protection policies.

Project Results

The interim results of the project are made accessible as "working papers" on this website. Everybody interested in the topic of our research is invited to read the papers and send comments to the following address: emma.lantschner@uni-graz.at.

The focus studies of the empirical part are drafted in the course of 2009 and will further be discussed at an international conference in May 2010, to which scholars and practitioners from the concerned states and from other European countries will be invited. The conference will serve to present and discuss the results of the studies and will lead to the preparation of a book publication.
