Yonatan Fessha first Marie Curie Fellow hosted in South Tyrol

Yonatan Fessha from the Faculty of Law, University of the Western Cape, South Africa, began his two-year Marie Curie Fellowship at Eurac Research on July 2, 2018. Funded by the European Commission, Fessha will implement a project about intergovernmental relations in divided societies, from a comparative perspective.

Fessha has published widely on matters pertaining to federalism, autonomy, politicised ethnicity, local government, constitutional interpretation and judicial review. His research centres on constitutional law, human rights, ethnicity and nationalism in plural societies, federalism, decentralisation, local government and intergovernmental relations.

Fessha is exemplary of the lasting impact of capacity building exchanges between Eurac Research and international organisations, governments and foundations, especially in the federal or federalising countries in Africa and Asia. Fessha took part in the very first Winter School on Federalism and Governance at Eurac Research in 2010. After attending Eurac Research’s Marie Curie Week in 2016, he prepared the application together with the Institute for Comparative Federalism and was selected by the European Commission for the Marie Curie Individual Fellowship Programme.

“The fellowship represents for me an opportunity to transition from issues of federal design to matters related to the practice of federalism. It is also an exciting opportunity to work in an institution and with colleagues that have expert knowledge in the practice of both federalism and intergovernmental relations,” Fessha says.
