As a research institute that is embedded in the geographical context of autonomous South Tyrol within Italy and is characterized by its proximity to the classical European federations Austria, Germany and Switzerland, it seems quite natural that comparative studies on federalism and autonomy are of particular interest.
Thereby, the institute's early research in this area rather concentrated on the role of these concepts and their institutions in managing territorial, ethnic and linguistic diversity. More recently, we have extended our research to also studying the practical application and implications of federalism and autonomy in different areas.
This is epitomized by the establishment of new foci of policy-oriented research such as those on effective and democratic governance through institutional innovation, financial relations as well as immigration and integration in multi-level systems.
