SMILE - Knowledge Sharing on Minorities, Inclusion and Language Diversity in Europe Abstract Abstract Objective

The aim of the project "SMILE" is to make the issues of language minority and cultural diversity accessible to a wide audience. A local and international audience should be trained and sensitized on the topics of linguistic diversity, minority rights, ethnic coexistence, intercultural dialogue and migration through educational events, various workshops, concerts and film festivals in South Tyrol and other regions of Europe.

Background

Due to their extended experience and cooperation, EURAC’s Institute for Specialised Communication and Multilingualism, Institute for Minority Rights and Institute for Studies on Federalism and Regionalism jointly designed the project “SMILE - Knowledge Sharing on Minorities, Inclusion and Language Diversity in Europe”.

The initiative is divided into three modules, each one organized and implemented by the Institute which has special expertise and networks in the specific area of competence. The three modules have different focuses and target groups so that they complement each other:

• Module 1: "The language of my neighborhood in focus"
(Institute for Specialised Communication and Multilingualism)
Target group: Teenage Pupils from Bolzano/Bozen.

• Module 2: "Generating Trust - building confidence"
(Institute for Minority Rights)
Target groups: University students, representatives of nongovernmental organizations, arts and cultural institutions.

• Module 3: "Winter School on Federalism and Governance 2012: Federalism and Minority Protection"
(Institute for Studies on Federalism and Regionalism)
Target groups: Post-graduate students, academics and subject matter experts (e.g. administration).

Module 1: "The language of my neighborhood in focus"
(Institute for Specialised Communication and Multilingualism)
Target group: Pupils from Bolzano/Bozen.

The aim of the module "The language of my neighborhood in focus" is to investigate the pupils’ social representations of languages, in particular their perception of minority status. These workshops propose an approach to complex but important issues for educational policy and coexistence, such as: How do pupils describe the language as a component of their personal/collective identity? How do they interpret the diversity of the languages that surround them?
The central elements will be the pupils’ interpretations of the photographs as well as the construction processes of a creative project on their environment.
The photographic medium will be used in three dimensions:
1. Through the playful and creative dimension, the pupils will be encouraged to reflect and express their opinions on the diversity of languages and the languages’ status in their environment.
2. Through the educational dimension the pupils will have the opportunity to become the conscious observers of their own environment.
3 The pupils will reflect on the construction of common representations of languages and urban areas.
