Description

In the digital age, large quantities of textual documents are available in electronic form. At the same time, approaches and methods for the automatic processing of language data and automatic information retrieval have undergone rapid developments.
The project OPATCH aims at supporting the human user in exploiting digital data resources. OPATCH intends to develop a platform for the analysis of digital text collections. The platform will comprise a portal for historic newspapers and a portal for linguistically oriented corpus analyses, which will integrate visualizations as analysis tools.
The research aim underlying the project is to understand and trial-run how the latest approaches from computational linguistics, statistics and information visualization can be combined and extended to create a sophisticated search environment for a variety of user groups. In this, the project aims at serving the public, students and teachers as well as researchers by facilitating the use of current and historical documents of cultural heritage.
The project is carried out by the Institute for Specialised Communication and Multilingualism at the European Academy of Bolzano/Bozen in cooperation with the library 'Landesbibliothek Dr. Friedrich Teßmann' and the Institute for Corpus Linguistics and Text Technology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

The project is financed by the Autonome Provinz Bozen - Südtirol, Abteilung Bildungsförderung, Universität und Forschung, Landesgesetz vom 13. Dezember 2006, Nr. 14 ''Forschung und Innovation" / Provincia autonoma di Bolzano - Alto Adige, Ripartizione Diritto allo studio, università e ricerca scientifica, Legge provinciale 13 dicembre 2006, n. 14 ''Ricerca e innovazione''.
