The development of the Internet as a central medium for data exchange and retrieval affects the world of lexicography in a particular way: in the last years the number of monolingual or multilingual Internet dictionaries available for many languages has grown steadily. Internet dictionaries are produced by private authors, editors or scientific institutions and used in a variety of situations, e.g. for translation. The structure and design of the different dictionaries may vary accordingly.
Against this background a series of new conceptual and technical challenges emerge as well as new research approaches. The members of the scientific network “Internetlexikografie” (internet lexicography), i.e. lexicographers and researchers at universities, research institutions and dictionary projects, will deal with a series of relevant themes during specific workshops. The network is supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) but considers also other languages next to the developments in German language lexicography. The results will be discussed in various publications.
