​On this page, you can find a selection of buildings that have received an energy retrofit in recent years with the support of Eurac Research. Our institute carries out applied research: technologies and innovations created in collaboration with companies and other scientific partners as part of European research projects are tested in real buildings.​

Social housing complex, Passeggiata dei Castani street, Bolzano

The municipality of Bolzano has carried out a complete refurbishment of a social housing apartment complex. The work included an energy refit, the installation of a mechanical ventilation system, and geothermal heating, photovoltaic and solar thermal systems. The renovation was carried out as part of the SINFONIA Project.


The Role of Eurac Research: as part of the SINFONIA project, Eurac Research coordinates the activities relevant to the Bolzano district. In this building our researchers have provided support in relation to the measurement of solar potential, the development of prefabricated facades and prototype testing, the management of interior comfort and post-refurbishment energy consumption monitoring. Social housing complex, Brescia​ street, Bolzano

The Social Housing Institute of the Province of Bolzano has carried out the thorough refurbishment of a social housing apartment complex. This work included the refurbishment of the building's exterior cladding including the replacement of doors and windows, the refurbishment of the hydrothermal and electrical systems, the restructuring and superelevation of the roof, and the installation of photovoltaic and solar thermal systems on the roof and on the façade. The renovation was carried out as part of the SINFONIA Project.


The Role of Eurac Research: as part of the SINFONIA project, Eurac Research coordinates the activities relevant Bolzano district. In this building, our researchers have provided support in relation to the design and specification of the monitoring system, the development of data management and processing systems. More information on this building can be found here.

Social housing complex, Trento (ongoing)

Under the scope of project Stardust, the Institute of Social and Housing in the Province of Trento is undertaking the refurbishment of 164 apartments covering a total of about 15,000 square metres. This work involves the renovation of the energy and technological systems of these dwellings.


The Role of Eurac Research: as part of the STARDUST project, Eurac Research coordinates the activities relevant Trento district. In this refurbishment our researchers provide support in relation to building modelling and dynamic simulation of energy performance and comfort, the construction of photovoltaic systems integrated into the roof and on the façade, a geothermal-based heat pump system, a method for the natural ventilation of the rooms and an advanced system for monitoring consumption and comfort. Multi-family houses, Oslo
 

This refurbishment project, managed by Boligbygg, involved improving the façade using prefabricated modules with integrated high-performance technology while ensuring minimum inconvenience to the residents during the work due to a very tight timeframe. This renovation took place under the auspices of the European project 4RinEU.


The Role of Eurac Research: the 4RinEU project is coordinated by Eurac Research. In this building, our researchers provide support in relation to the refurbishment by the development of façade modules in relation to the integration of photovoltaic and ventilation systems, and the monitoring of air quality pre and post-renovation. More information about this building can be found here.

Shopping Centre, Modena
  

Energy retrofit work by INRES Coop in order to reduce the energy consumption of the building with a view to improving their efficiency and internal comfort. The renovation work was carried out under the auspices of the CommONEnergy project.

In this building, our researchers have provided support in relation to building modeling and dynamic simulations of energy performance and comfort, interventions to improve ventilation and natural light, energy consumption and interior comfort monitoring. Historical Market "Mercado do Val", Valladolid
 

Renovation work on this building was carried out by the Municipal Council of Valladolid in order to reduce the building's energy consumption, through multifunctional and modular facades, natural ventilation and geothermal heating pump systems. This work was carried out as part of the CommONEnergy project.


The Role of Eurac Research: Eurac Research coordinated this European project. In this building, our researchers have provided support in relation to the development of the façade system and the creation of dynamic modeling to improve and manage ventilation and natural light, and the monitoring of energy consumption and interior comfort. Multi-family residential building, Madrid
 

The renovations carried out by EMVS Madrid involved the reinforcement of the building, the thermal insulation of building's envelope, the installation of a centralized heating and cooling system that includes a solar thermal system. This work was carried out as part of the European project iNSPiRE.


The Role of Eurac Research: Eurac Research coordinated this European project. In this building, our researchers have provided support in relation to the development and installation of plug & play hydronic unit made in Eurac Research, building modeling and dynamic simulations of energy performance and comfort, consumption and interior comfort monitoring.

Multi-family residential building, Stuttgart
  ​

The thorough refurbishment of the building managed by Wohnungsbau Ludwigsburg was carried out with the intention of testing different prefabricated technologies, for example, a prefabricated wooden façade that includes a ventilation system, windows and doors, and some hydronic solutions.


This refurbishment took place as part of the European project iNSPiRE, coordinated by Eurac Research. In this building, our researchers offered support in relation to refurbishment project by creating an easy-to-install prefabricated renovation kit, building modeling and dynamic simulations of energy performance and comfort, consumption and interior comfort monitoring. ​
