Wolfram Sparber is heading the Institute for Renewable Energy at EURAC research since it’s foundation in 2005. He was responsible for the start up and the stepwise development and growth of the Institute. The Institutes activities are focused in the field of solar thermal heating and cooling, energy management in buildings and photovoltaic systems.

In this fields Wolfram Sparber is involved in many international projects and member of several committees and councils. Since 2011 he is Vice President of the board of the European Technology Platform Renewable Heating and Cooling; in 2011 he was Member of a technical team of experts of the International Energy Agency for the elaboration of a global Technology Roadmap document.

Since November 2011 Wolfram Sparber took over the presidency of the board of SEL AG, a regional energy utility being active in the field of energy production, distribution, trading and services. The field of activities include electrical energy, thermal energy and natural gas, whereby the energy production is mainly based on renewable sources. In 2010 SEL AG had a turnover of around 270 million €.

In the recent years he was invited as Visiting Professor to different Universities. For example is he involved in teaching activities at the 2nd level Master CasaClima at the University of Bolzano, and was involved in the IMAT dual master program at the Retsuimekan Asia Pacific University in Beppu (Japan).

In 2004 Wolfram Sparber joined TIS innovation park of Bolzano (Italy) for the establishment, development and growth of a regional centre for renewable energies (RENERTEC). The centre became a Business Area of TIS in the following years, a strong collaboration is still going on.

From 2002 to 2004 he joined the Department of Solar Cells, Materials and Technologies at Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems where he was involved in scientific projects for the introduction of surface treatment methods of silicon wafers in solar cell production lines.

Wolfram Sparber studied Applied Physics at Graz University of Technology (Austria) and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (Spain).

Professional experience 
  • Since November 2011: President of the board of SEL AG. SEL AG is a holding including around 30 companies mainly active in the field of electrical energy production by hydro power plants. Furthermore the company includes 4 district heating systems (based on biomass, waste incineration and natural gas) and the management of over 5000 km of electricity and natural gas grid in the region. 
  • Since June 2005: Head of the Institute for Renewable Energy of the European Academy of Bozen/Bolzano. Responsible for the establishment and built up of a research team counting around 35 researchers in 2011.
    The research activities are focused in the fields solar thermal heating and cooling, photovoltaic’s and energy in buildings. The team is active in testing of equipment in dedicated laboratories, monitoring of energy systems and buildings and various simulation activities.
    Most activities are carried out in cooperation with international industry and/or scientific partners.
  • 2006-2010: Visiting Professor at Free University of Bolzano - Italy (Master CasaClima, 2006-2010), Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University - Japan (Dual Master International Material flow Management IMAT, 2010), Politecnico di Milano - Italy (Technical course “Photovoltaics", 2009-2010).
    Responsible for the lessons on solar thermal heating and cooling systems or solar photovoltaic systems. Further more active as tutor for the elaboration of master thesis’s.
  • Since June 2004: TIS-RENERTEC, Regional Centre for Renewable Energy, Bolzano - Italy. Until 2007 responsible for the establishment, development and growth of the centre. Since 2007 limitation on the project management for the support of companies within the foundation of new business areas in the field of renewable energy and allocation of companies active within this sector in the region.
  • May 2002-June 2004: Fraunhofer, Institute for Solar Energy Systems, Freiburg - Germany, Department of Solar Cells, Materials and Technology. Production Technology Group Collaborator and later technical manager of scientific projects for the introduction of surface treatment methods in various European solar cell production lines. First 9 months: elaboration of diploma thesis in solid state physics in the field of surface treatment of crystalline silicon solar cells.
  • Several month in 2001, 2000, 1999: STENUM (business consulting company for energy and environment in Graz - Austria), Energytech (engineering office for energy technology in buildings and district heating systems, Bolzano - Italy), SOLID (company for solar thermal installation and design in Graz - Austria).
