About

Last update: 26.09.2023

Dariush Ghasemi is a biostatistician working on the CHRIS study data as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie PhD fellow in Biostatistics & Epidemiology group at the EURAC Institute for Biomedicine. He has proficiency in applying machine learning models for disease risk classification, specifically on Type 2 Diabetes using >1 million EHRs of the general population in his hometown.

Having graduated his master program in September 2019, he was accepted for the Europe 2020 Horizon PhD program (TrainCKDis) at the department of Human Genetics at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), Netherlands. After moving to Italy in February 2021, he started his three-year PhD at Eurac. He's been working on the genetic data derived from a large population-based cohort study in South-Tyrol (CHRIS) to find the causal variants associated with kidney function and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

He applys Genome-Wide Association studies (GWAS) followed by linkage analysis, mediation analysis, and Mendelian Randomization approaches using various tools in statistical genetics, bioinformatics, and computational genomics (Linux bash/shell environments, Plink2, REGENIE, LDPred2, emeraLD, haplo.Stats, etc.). He has also pooled SNP-array and whole exome sequencing (WES) data to impute the haplotypes using a local WES-based reference panel.

Since early 2022, he has also been collaborating with a group of lead analysts in one of the largest international consortia of meta-analysis GWAS called CKDGen, with >2 millions of general population from more than 150 centers, designed to explore genomic determinants of CKD. Round 5 of this mega-scale project has been ongoing until fall of 2023.
