Modelling of the structures’ network to increase the degree of naturalness in the cultural landscape

Eurac Research is an interdisciplinary research center located in Bolzano, Italy. At the Institute for Alpine Environment, we perform ecosystem research with a special focus on global change in mountain environments. The team conducts regional, national and international research projects dealing with ecosystem and landscape ecology of mountain environments with a special focus on global change, biodiversity, ecosystem services and sustainable development.

The current position is embedded in the EU Interreg Alpine Space project "LUIGI" (Linking Urban and Inner-Alpine Green Infrastructure -Multifunctional Ecosystem Services for more liveable territories) at Eurac Research and supports regional efforts for sustainable spatial planning in South Tyrol. The aims of the position is to modelling of the spatial distribution of natural structures (hedges, single trees) in the cultural landscape (hay meadows, permanent cultures, arable land, settlements, summer pastures) of South Tyrol in order to increase the degree of naturalness (D2N) after Rüdisser et al. (2012).



  • Mapping and evaluating of the natural structure in the cultural landscape of South Tyrol
  • Data processing with GIS and documentation of the raised land-use maps and structuring maps
  • Modelling of the Distance to Nature (D2N) indicator, optimizing of natural structure distribution in the permanent cultures
  • Research and evaluation of metadata for the ecological development in the project sites
  • Assistance in the analysis and evaluation of the effects of landscape structure and land use on the D2N of the investigated areas
  • Elaboration of a final report and workshop presentations of the most important results



  • Mapping of landscape structures (on-screen) and verification in freeland
  • Modelling with ArcGIS
  • Achieved knowledge in research methods and study design
  • Management of research data e.g. collection of data, evaluation of data
  • Social skills e.g. discussions during team and stakeholder meetings, dealing with and expression of criticism in scientific workplaces
  • Creation and layout of scientific reports
  • Good German (good English and / or Italian desirable)
