The overall aim of the project Climate Change Impact Maps for Austrian Regions (CLIMA-MAP), financed by the Austrian Climate Change Research Program (ACRP) was to support Austrian municipalities in understanding the impacts of climate change and in implementing this newly gained knowledge into their decision-making processes in taking action to successfully adapt to climate change. Strategies for climate change adaptation exist on different levels, but only few activities have been implemented in Austria’s municipalities. CLIMA-MAP aimed to fill this gap by designing climate-change impact maps based on the latest climate change projections for Austria (ÖKS15) taking into account the uncertainties related to climate change. These maps supported municipalities in interpreting local climate change impacts, in building capacities and in implementing adaptation measures. Co-developing impact maps with end-users ensured that the information needs of municipalities were met. In this project eurac research developed methods to select indicators that were subsequently used to map climate change impacts at the municipality scale (work package 3). In particular, we focused on the set-up of a criteria matrix describing good climate change indicators, the identification of important indicators developed in Austrian and European studies and the final selection of indicators in cooperation with user groups identified previously in work package 2.
