Worrying about potentially losing the ability to live autonomously and to coordinate the activities of daily life independently or at least self-determined is not just a burden for older adults themselves but also for their social environment. Individual impairments and frailty make this situation even more difficult to handle and often result in having to move from the familiar surroundings to an unknown place or to a place, the affected persons would not choose to live in by their own free will. Being anxious about restricting the time and freedom of their social environment and especially of the informal carers often leads to a process of shutting themselves off from the closest people. At the same time this social distance is causing concerns for the family, neighbours and friends as well as for the formal carers, even if the primary end-user is staying in the familiar residential environment.

The idea of i-evAALution is to take the challenges of primary, secondary and tertiary end-users - identified in preliminary research - seriously and at the same time adequately take the generally fast-growing digitalization of the consumer world under consideration while combining and integrating existing, available and proven AAL solutions with a technology readiness level (TRL) of TRL7 and TRL8 to support older adults staying self determined and socially included in their familiar environments. i-evAALution is focusing on the development of new functionalities of existing solutions that support the interoperability and enable processes involving several existing ICT-solutions. This allows use cases and smart scenarios to reinforce the security and comfort at home and additionally enables a higher degree of mobility and social interaction. It involves all relevant target groups (primary end-users, informal and formal carers, secondary end-user organisations and solution providers, incl. service call centres) and also secures access to a control group of the same size. The goal of the multicentre randomized controlled trial is to gain meaningful insights on which significant impacts regarding the quality of life can be measured – of primary as well as of connected informal and formal secondary end-users.
