The 2022 Wilderness Medical Society research award has just been given to Giacomo Strapazzon, director of the Institute for Mountain Emergency Medicine. The award, presented during the society's annual congress which took place this year in Colorado (USA), paid tribute to Strapazzon's career in emergency medicine in remote environments. Strapazzon’s professional journey began in the Pyramid International Laboratory-Observatory on Everest in Nepal and has continued with more than 30 clinical studies both in the field and the laboratory, with a focus on avalanche accidents, high-altitude diseases and mountain emergency medicine, including rescue by helicopter and in special scenarios. Founded in the early 1980s in the United States, the Wilderness Medical Society is the world's largest society of researchers, physicians and practitioners in the field of medicine in remote areas.
