Eurac Research ecologists are using a special photographic technique to study the morphology  of the forest canopy and accumulate information about South Tyrol’s woodlands. The goal: to monitor their health and predict their future.

Increasingly, cosmic ray probes are being used to monitor soil moisture and estimate the amount of water available in the form of snow in the mountains. A joint research project with the University of Innsbruck combines the advantages of this technology with those of satellite images. So, how do cosmic ray probes work? What are their advantages? And, what needs to be considered when using them in the mountains?

From monitoring natural hazards and assisting mountain rescues to applications in agriculture and forestry science. Drones are proving to be increasingly valuable allies for researchers, professionals and administrative departments. Drones acquire more detailed data than satellites and can provide measurements that would be demanding if taken manually. In recent years the remotely piloted aircraft have been tested in a range of diverse and challenging situations  with the latest tests being conducted at an altitude of 9,000 m.a.s.l.

Eurac Research and Mountain Rescue South Tyrol tested the use of drones to locate and rescue accident victims in Bletterbach Gorge. The results are in, drones save valuable time and increase safety for rescue services in inaccessible areas.

First aid: drones make a difference

In recent months, research teams from emergency medicine, mountain rescue, drone and electrical engineering have been drawn to the Bletterbach Gorge (South Tyrol) time and again to simulate rescue missions. The interregional research project START, has seen a steady flow of these teams to the gorge, to investigate whether drones can help in the localisation and initial treatment of persons injured in difficult to access terrain.
