Bookscapes and Mountain Stories
07.01.2020 - 31.12.2022

The key objectives of this interdisciplinary researchl project at the interface of literary studies, economic and cultural geography are:

Raising the awareness for literature as a defining part of the cultural, intangible and literary heritage of mountain and rural areas.

Providing literary perspectives on the mountain and rural areas for stimulating and strengthening the public discourse on these areas.

Contributing to added value chain creation and green growth through incentivising and valorising literary tourism.

Project Description

The mountain and rural areas constitute a vital element of our collective imaginary, supplied by one of their greatest cultural treasures: their representation in thousands of literary works. This abundance of texts has never been analysed in a coordinated transnational approach, nor has it been linked to large-scale historical, current transformation processes and future developments in the rural and Alpine regions. Therefore we correlate data and scientific knowledge from literary, geographic and socioeconomic sources.

One key outcome is ´Rural Criticism` (https://rural-criticism.net/) that is based on a critical analysis of various village novels before the background of the profound environmental, landscape and socioeconomic transformations in rural areas. It is the result of a joint interdisciplinary collaboration of the cultural and literary scientist Ms. Barbara Piatti (http://barbara-piatti.ch/) and the Eurac Ressearch researcher and geographer Thomas Streifeneder (http://www.eurac.edu/en/research/mountains/regdev/staff/Pages/staffdetails.aspx?persId=40).
