Cosa ci fa una sedia dentro a una specie di casa degli specchi? I ricercatori e le ricercatrici di Eurac Research l'hanno sistemata nella camera di prova del nuovo VOC Lab per misurare se i materiali di cui è fatta emettono formaldeide o altre sostanze nocive.

Il nuovo VOC Lab rintraccia le sostanze nocive emesse da materiali edili e mobili, le quantifica e testa materiali innovativi in grado di ridurle.

"Digitalization is a social learning process"

What does minority politics have to do with health? A lot it seems, as emerges in our conversation with researcher Katharina Crepaz whose academic work focuses primarily on diversity, European politics, and autonomy. Whilst obtaining her habilitation at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences at the Technical University of Munich, Crepaz transitioned to studying the social determinants or impacts of living environments, age, gender and migration on health.

Political and health scientist and Katharina Crepaz studied the influence of social participation on health. Her thesis on scientific qualification for teaching received an award from the Technical University of Munich.

Il cosiddetto “agrivoltaico” prevede l’utilizzo dei terreni agricoli per produrre energia solare. In pratica, sotto si coltiva frutta e sopra si produce energia elettrica grazie a moduli fotovoltaici installati su strutture metalliche. Il sistema regala anche un po’ d’ombra alle coltivazioni sottostanti e può alloggiare sensori per monitorare l’ambiente.

Coltivare e produrre energia sullo stesso terreno è possibile, vantaggioso ed è il futuro. Ne parla l’esperto di fotovoltaico David Moser

Eurac Research President Roland Psenner fears that when it comes to the power of facts, science sometimes deludes itself: The feeling of being among the losers can make people rebel even against indisputably correct measures, whether they concern the corona crisis or climate change. Wolfram Sparber, an expert on renewable energy, also sees a lack of social acceptance as the biggest brake on the energy transition. Both are convinced that affluent regions should set a good example in climate protection, but all too often the attitude of "Not in my backyard!” prevails in South Tyrol.

"Knowing the facts does not necessarily lead to a change in behavior"

Fare ricerca ecologica significa anche avventurarsi sulle vette alpine alla ricerca di nuove specie. Queste missioni dedicate ad approfondire la conoscenza della fauna locale riservano talvolta sorprese interessanti.

In alta Venosta sono state identificate quattro specie di ragno mai ritrovate prima in Alto Adige. Due di loro sono una novità anche per l’Italia. Eccole in una raccolta di foto.

Phengaris arion’s behavioural ecology is unique: by allowing its larvae to be carried away by ants to their nests, the butterfly young can gorge on ant larvae ̶ albeit at the risk of becoming prey themselves. This intriguing life cycle fascinates our entomologist Elia Guariento, making the Black-spotted Large Blue one of his favorite butterflies. Although this infiltrator is rare and on the globally endangered list, Elia was able to document the species in certain South Tyrolean grasslands.

Mountains unite them: Ecologist Ulrike Tappeiner has been studying alpine ecosystems for four decades and keeps records on climate change and biodiversity. Emergency Physician Hermann Brugger researches the effects of altitude on the human body. Both work with huge data sets, from which they extract answers to scientific questions from months, often years of work. It's time-consuming, but it's the only way to gradually gain a better understanding of our complex world.

"The most direct route is rarely feasible"

A paleogenetic study conducted on the skeletal remains of 94 individuals found at 11 archaeological sites in South Tyrol and dating from the period between the 5th and 12th centuries AD suggests that people moved around and admixed with other European groups, albeit with some interesting differences. Diet was also varied to arrive at these conclusions, the research team analyzed complete mitochondrial DNA transmitted through the maternal line as well as isotopes that provided information on diet and mobility.

Un gruppo di ricerca interdisciplinare di Eurac Research e dell'Istituto promozione lavoratori ha esaminato queste domande in uno studio. Felix Windegger è uno degli autori principali.

Maps drawn up by an international research team show how much freedom of movement wildlife has in the Dinaric Alps - from Albania to the Karst - and how this movement can be encouraged.

“Data sustainability is the new frontier of research”

I tempi di reazione durante i soccorsi in elicottero ad altissima quota sono più lenti (anche se i partecipanti non se ne sono resi conto), mentre le altre funzioni cognitive indagate sono nella norma, anche a 5.000 metri.
