As part of the CHRIS study, a research team investigated how smoking affects the bacterial communities in our mouths. The results are clear: as cigarette consumption increases, the number of bacteria that need oxygen decreases. Furthermore, according to the results of the study – one of the largest in the world on the salivary microbiome, those who quit smoking were only indistinguishable from non-smokers after five years of no smoking.

What smoking does to oral bacteria

Hermann Brugger, head of the Institute for Alpine Emergency Medicine, is the editor of what is probably the most comprehensive reference work on rescue operations in the mountains. On its 700 pages, 80 authors have summarised the current state of the art in this field, from accidents caused by lightning strikes and the rescue of avalanche victims to altitude-induced psychosis.

During construction work for the Ora motorway bypass in 2007, excavators came across human skeletons lying under a rocky outcrop. The Provincial Monuments Office commissioned a research team to analyze the remains, which were then dated to the Copper Age (approx. 3000-2700 BC). This year, a team from Eurac Research was able to prove that two of the skeletons belonged to closely related men, most likely father and son, who were buried together with an infant. These results were revealed by analyzing ancient DNA from the remains.

The preparation is the real adventure

A study by Eurac Research recently published in the Nature journal’s Scientific Reports paints a discouraging picture of recent decades. Between 1982 and 2020, the period of snow cover in mountain areas around the world decreased by an average of about 15 days. The Alps are in line with the average where the reduction in snow cover sits between 10 and 20 days. The study is one of the 100 most downloaded articles in the Earth, Environment and Ecology category in 2022. With a longer observation period, it substantiates the results of previous studies and helps to refine a NASA model.

In Tadami, northern Japan, it is a tradition that at the age of six, children give relatives and friends a handwritten card with wishes of a disaster-free year.  An unusual wish for some perhaps, but between floods, landslides and mudslides, the people of Tadami have more experience with disasters than most. Over two months of field research, Paola Fontanella Pisa, a scholar of Asian languages, cultures and societies and the role that memory transmission plays in disaster prevention, collected the practices implemented by this small mountain community.

Ready for the worst

How long can samples be stored in a biobank? Does one pay to store the samples or to use them? Who can access them? And how do geopolitics impact such facilities? Geneticist Alessandro De Grandi, head of the Eurac Research biobank has the answers.

The most obvious answer is to preserve biological samples, but there’s much more to it than that. 

So, what’s a biobank actually for?

Is it possible to transform an entire fleet of public buses to zero-emission vehicles? A team from Eurac Research has been working together with local transport companies and other stakeholders to develop a simulation model and collect real world data to understand the feasibility of this type of choice. The initiative has brought the entities together under the aegis of several European projects.

Data and scenarios for zero-emission buses

Many healthy people carry genetic mutations that could increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, however in all likelihood they will never develop it. A study by Eurac Research has examined healthy mutation carriers and, for the first time, used cell models to identify the so-called “molecular markers” that play an important role in detecting molecular dysfunction in the early stages of Parkinson's disease, and in the search for protective factors.
