Elisa Veronese graduated in Energy Engineering in the year 2017 at the Free University of Bolzano - Università degli studi di Trento with a master thesis entitled "Competitiveness of PV systems in the current regulatory framework from an LCOE perspective". She started the PhD in the year 2018 with the Politecnico di Milano on the topic of improving the competitiveness of large-scale PV plants in future energy system scenarios analysing different strategies to improve their flexibility.

She is working as researcher at Eurac since the year 2015 in the field of photovoltaic systems. She contributed to the European Project "Solar Bankability" and some of its technical report. Her main research areas are the profitability and sustainability analysis of photovoltaic technologies and the modelling of energy scenarios with high PV penetration.

She is the main author of some scientific publications on the topic of economic profitability and environmental sustainability of PV plants.

Flexible Demand and Its Impacts on Future Utility‐Scale Photovoltaic Integration and Generation Costs: Case Study on the Italian Energy Transition

The energy transition implies an increase in electrical demand, which shall be met primarily by renewable energy sources, potentially raising costs for the system and the community. However, increasing consumption flexibility has the potential to reduce these additional costs by minimizing the risk of curtailment and reducing the need for new storage and grid line capacity. Few studies have been conducted to examine the techno-economic implications of improving consumption flexibility from an energy system perspective, but none have determined how these gains may affect future solar power integration costs. In this study, it is aimed to fill the gap by assessing the economic effects of flexible demand on solar integration and generation costs. Different scenarios for 2030 and 2040 of the Italian energy system are investigated taking into account future flexible demand availability and geographical distribution. In the results, it is shown that enabling a 12 h flexible demand can lower powerline transport capacity by up to 14%, and storage capacity by up to 25% in the 2040 scenarios. This corresponds to a reduction in photovoltaic (PV) generation costs from 11 to 13% by lowering overall PV integration costs, with peaks of up to 20% in some cases.

Impact of Non-Residential Users on the Energy Performance of Renewable Energy Communities Considering Clusterization of Consumptions

Renewable energy communities foster the users’ engagement in the energy transition, paving the way to the integration of distributed renewable energy sources. So far, the scientific literature has focused on residential users in energy communities, thus overlooking the opportunities for industrial and commercial members. This paper seeks to bridge this gap by extending the analysis to the role of non-residential users. The proposed methodology develops an effective clustering approach targeted to actual non-residential consumption profiles. It is based on the k-means algorithm and statistical characterization based on relevant probability density function curves. The employed clusterization procedure allows for effectively reducing a sample of 49 real industrial load profiles up to 11 typical consumption curves, whilst capturing all the relevant characteristics of the initial population. Furthermore, a peer-to-peer sharing strategy is developed accounting for distributed and shared storage. Three scenarios are considered to validate the model with different shares of non-residential users, and the results are then evaluated by means of shared energy, self-consumption, and self-sufficiency indices. Moreover, the results show that the integration of a large non-residential prosumer in a REC may increase the self-sufficiency of residential members by 8.2%, self-consumption by 4.4%, and the overall shared energy by 37.3%. Therefore, the residential community consistently benefits from the presence of non-residential users, with larger users inducing more pronounced effects.

Photovoltaic (PV) will have a prominent role in the future energy mix to achieve the energy and climate targets. However, its variability requires that its exploitation must be improved to minimize its integration costs. The objective of this research is to provide a methodology applicable to any energy system modelling tool for assessing the benefits of flexible demand as an option to better manage the PV variability and to reduce its integration costs. Two strategies are used to shift the flexible demand within three different scenarios based on the Italian energy system and its planned evolution to the year 2030. The effects of flexibility are investigated through an expansion capacity optimization of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and powerlines transport capacities in three different scenarios. Results suggest that flexible demand allows to reduce the BESS capacity of around 2 %–6 %, and powerlines capacity in the range of 2%–10 %, thus the resulting VRES avoided integration costs varies from 758 M€ to 8611 M€. However, it has negligible effects in boosting RES penetration and lowering the CO₂ emissions. The estimated DSM remuneration opens up interesting possibilities for applications in the context of energy communities and electricity market aggregators.

Costs of utility‐scale photovoltaic systems integration in the future Italian energy scenarios

This study aims at introducing a new metric to evaluate the production costs of photovoltaic plants that includes the impacts of adding them in the existing energy system. In other words, the levelized cost of electricity concept is enlarged to incorporate the so‐called integration costs. They consider the costs of reinforcing the grid infrastructure to accept the increase of variable renewable sources production and the effects on the operating conditions of the existing fossil fuel power plants. These costs are applied to the utility‐scale photovoltaic plants to analyse how their market parity and profitability would change in the future if a more systematic approach is used to evaluate their production costs. Moreover, a bottom‐up energy system model performing an operational optimization is introduced and coupled with a genetic algorithm to perform the expansion capacity optimization. This model is used to study the effects on the utility‐scale photovoltaic plants' dispatchability if the integration costs are included. The Italian energy system and photovoltaic market projected to the year 2030 are taken as reference. The results of the market parity highlight that its achievement will not be compromised when the integration costs are considered, mainly thanks to the strong decrease of the investment costs expected in the future years. The results of the optimization underline that the future role of photovoltaic plants in the energy mix with low CO₂ emissions will not be significantly affected, even when these additional costs are applied as annual costs.

Improving the traditional levelized cost of electricity approach by including the integration costs in the techno‐economic evaluation of future photovoltaic plants

The levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is a techno‐economic parameter used to evaluate the cost of a kilowatt‐hour of energy produced from a selected power plant. The initial investment, annual operation and maintenance costs together with the annual energy production are some of the input data needed to determine the LCOE. The most typical approach to calculate the LCOE does not account for the interaction of the new power plant with the existing energy system, assuming indirectly the power plant as stand‐alone. This can be misleading in scenarios with high variable renewable energy sources (VRES) penetration as costs related to overproduction, reinforcement of the grid and additional efforts of existing fossil fuels power plants to satisfy the electricity demand that is not instantly covered by VRES production are not accounted for. The aim of this work is to define a general methodology of easy application for the estimation of these additional costs, called integration costs, of the photovoltaic (PV) technology with the corresponding parameter called system LCOE. In order to demonstrate the importance of the new definition, the methodology is applied to the future Italian energy system and PV sector foreseen for the year 2030. The Italian PV LCOE in 2030 calculated with the usual methodology ranges from 12.55 to 15.93 €/MWh, while the system LCOE can be as high as 22 €/MWh with a relevant increase by on average 50%. In case of addition of storage to PV systems, the system LCOE after the addition of the integration costs ranges from 45 to 51 €/MWh. However, even when batteries and integration costs are included, PV remains competitive compared to the market price.

This study aims at evaluating the production costs of photovoltaic plants that includes the impacts of adding new photovoltaic installations in the existing energy system via the use of the metric “system LCOE”. In the system LCOE, the Levelized Cost of Electricity concept is enlarged to incorporate the so-called integration costs: i.e. the costs of reinforcing the grid infrastructure to accept the increase of variable renewable sources production and the effects on the operating conditions of the existing fossil fuels power plants. These costs are applied to utility-scale photovoltaic plants with and without storage to analyse how their market parity and profitability would change in the future if a more systematic approach is used to evaluate their production costs. The results of themarket parity highlight that its achievement will not be compromised when the integration costs are considered, mainly thanks to the strong decrease of the investment costs of PV and BESS components.

The Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) is a techno-economic parameter used to evaluate the cost of a kilowatt-hour of energy produced from a selected power plant. The initial investment, annual operation and maintenance costs, and annual energy production are some of the input data needed to determine the LCOE based on discounting methods. Many of the involved parameters are significantly time- and country-dependent. Moreover, the current diffusion of storage systems is modifying the methodology for the calculation of the LCOE to include costs and impacts of this additional component. This work is focused on the photovoltaic (PV) sector with the aim of updating the current state of the Italian PV market for different market segments (residential, commercial and utilityscale) and investigating the impacts of storage systems on profitability and grid parity achievement. Six different geographical locations are selected to represent the Italian irradiation and specific yield levels
