The mummy of a child with three tunics

The mummy of a child with three tunics, dates to the medieval period and is a rare example of its kind: museum collections tend to only display Egyptian mummies from the Pharaonic period. And unlike the latter, these particular remains were not subjected to embalming techniques but were prepared for burial with a rich dressing.

In the framework of the exhibition project “Mummies. Unwrapping the past”, the Bologna Archaeological Museum and the Eurac Research Institute for Mummy Studies have chosen to exhibit this natural mummy in a scientific context, namely in the laboratories where the study and conservation treatment took place due to its precarious state of preservation. The body of the child is in fact missing its head and feet.

After this temporary return to public view, the mummy will continue to be carefully preserved by the museum in Bologna but will not be exhibited, out of necessary respect for human dignity.
