This project aims at developing a daily high spatial resolution dataset for snow cover area (SCA) and snow water equivalent (SWE) in Andes Cordillera basins. The dataset is obtained by combining multi-source remote sensing and in-situ observations through in-house developed methodologies. It focuses on four adjacent basins (Rio Maipo and Aconcagua in Chile, Rio Mendoza and Tunuyàn in Argentina) that are important for the local hydrology and socio-economy. The resulting time-series will be delivered to well-known portals such as the GEOSS portal. This project, founded by the Mountain Research Initiative under the framework of the GEO Mountains Small Grants 2023, is developed internally but strong cooperation with local research institutes, policymakers and stakeholders will be established. The role of the Institute for Earth Observation of Eurac Research is to lead the data processing and time-series delivery.

Records from snow pillows were used to validate the obtained results, getting an overall bias of -6 mm and an RMSE of 42 mmCredit: Eurac Research | Carlo Marin
