Philipp Corradini is a researcher at the Institute for Regional Development of Eurac Research in Bolzano/Bozen since 2016. He completed the Master program (M.A.) “Entrepreneurship & Tourism”, (Major: Marketing Management & Tourism) at the MCI (Management Center Innsbruck) in 2014. Currently he collaborates in different projects in the areas of tourism development, mobility, and destination management within the regional and international context. Further areas of his work comprise resilience, tourism product and strategy development and system analysis. Being a passionate tourism professional, he spent most of his working and academic career within the tourism sector, utilizing quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

Climate Change Adaptation of Small Mountain Tourism Destinations in the European Alps: An Analysis of Adaptation Measures

This article explores how small mountain tourism destinations (MTDs) in the European Alps are beginning to translate climate change adaptation strategies into concrete, context-specific measures. Drawing on the strategies of 5 Pilot Working Areas (PWAs)—Ala di Stura and Balme (Italy), Werfenweng (Austria), Bohinj (Slovenia), Sattel-Hochstuckli (Switzerland), and Balderschwang (Germany)—of the Interreg Alpine Space project “BeyondSnow,” the study includes one of the first structural analyses of adaptation measures of MTDs. By applying the framework method for applied policy research, a matrix for the structural assessment of these measures was developed, including 3 analytic dimensions: overarching objectives, structural categories, and the distinction between implementation instruments (means) and the destination elements addressed (targets). Regarding overarching objectives, Year-round tourism emerged as the primary objective, followed by Destination cooperation and Sustainable development. Regarding structural categories, Product/concept development predominated as the implementation means, followed by Communication & marketing and Intradestination cooperation, with targets concentrated on Activity infrastructure and Activities & entertainment and complemented by Accommodation & gastronomy, Mobility & accessibility, and Destination community. Reading across the PWAs, means, and targets revealed 3 recurring implementation pathways: offer-led diversification, cooperation-led system alignment and portfolio extension, and distributed activation centered on specific audiences, placing low-barrier actions ahead of selective capital-intensive steps. The article concludes that, due to tourism's multidimensional, cross-sectoral nature, effective adaptation in small MTDs requires systemic approaches spanning products, community participation, and enabling infrastructure. Sequencing feasible, scalable measures, aligned with challenges identified, local governance, and sustainability visions, lays the groundwork for the broader systemic changes that are necessary for the creation of robust adaptation pathways, aimed at safeguarding both the competitiveness and viability of MTDs.

Project: Enhancing the Resilience of Alpine Space Snow Tourism Destinations and Communities to Climate Change

In the context of climate change adaptation, alpine winter tourism destinations are confronted with multiple, sometimes conflicting, types of adaptation measures, aiming first and foremost at reducing vulnerability to climate change. Measures’ scopes range from incremental adjustments to transformational turnarounds of existing pathways. Different actors can initiate and manage adaptation, including individual self-organised responses, private sector measures, community-led initiatives, and government-imposed measures. In this study, we apply two conceptual frameworks from climate change adaptation research to the case of Balderschwang, an alpine winter destination in Bavaria, Germany. The aim is to examine both its recent adaptation development and the adaptation visions of the residents. In addition to an in-depth assessment of the case study area, we base our analysis on qualitative interviews conducted with 12 residents, being both community members and tourism stakeholders. Our results show that different adaptation types, both in terms of the depth of intervention as well as the actors introducing and managing the adaptation, may coexist, potentially enabling, constraining, or even evolve into each other. Awareness of these adaptation types can help untangle adaptation barriers and identify potential linkages that could help align adaptation efforts across the different actors, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful climate change adaptation. We conclude that the collaborative approach, a mix of autonomous and planned adaptations, offers a promising way to streamline local adaptation needs with governmental support, increasing the possibility of successful adaptation.

Der Bericht „Klimarisiken und Anpassung – Wege zu einem klimaresilienten Südtirol“ untersucht die möglichen Klimafolgen und Klimarisiken sowie deren Ursachen für Südtirol für neun Sektoren und schlägt Strategien und Maßnahmenbündel für eine notwendige Klimaanpassung vor. Er soll die Klimaanpassungsstrategie des Landes vorbereiten sowie informieren und setzt daher die Schwerpunkte auf Klimarisiken, die weite Teile Südtirols oder mehrere Systeme, Sektoren oder Handlungsfelder gleichzeitig betreffen und sich kaskadenartig ausbreiten. Außerdem fokussiert diese Studie auf Anpassungsstrategien und Maßnahmen (wie z.B. Politikinstrumente), die auf der Ebene der Provinz eingeführt und umgesetzt werden sollten, und weniger auf technische Maßnahmen in einzelnen Handlungsfeldern.

Il documento “Rischi climatici e adattamento – Verso un Alto Adige resiliente al clima” analizza i possibili impatti, i rischi climatici e le loro cause per l’Alto Adige in nove settori e propone strategie e pacchetti di misure per il necessario adattamento. Lo scopo è quello di preparare e informare la strategia di adattamento ai cambiamenti climatici della Provincia; pertanto, si concentra sui rischi climatici che interessano vaste zone dell'Alto Adige o che colpiscono contemporaneamente diversi sistemi, settori o campi d'azione e si diffondono a cascata. Inoltre, questo studio si concentra sulle strategie e sulle misure di adattamento (come gli strumenti politici) che dovrebbero essere introdotte e implementate a livello provinciale, piuttosto che sulle misure tecniche nei singoli campi di azione.

Destination Resilience in the Context of COVID-19 and Its Hysteretic Impact on the Tourism System of South Tyrol

The present chapter investigates the resilience of Alpine destinations regarding the COVID-19 pandemic through the quantitative analysis of tourism flows. Exhibiting organizational tendencies of community-type destinations like most of the Alpine destinations (Flagestad & Hope, 2001), the geographic focus of the chapter lies on the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol, located in the Italian Alps. By quantitatively examining the monthly overnights from 1990 to 2022 and their distribution among the different accommodation structures, the chapter provides insights regarding the structural changes, considering the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent recovery of the tourism flows. The pandemic, which started its disruptive impact as a shock, became a long-term stressor due to its prolonged effects (Duro et al., 2022; Lew, 2014; Walker et al., 2012). Tourism destination systems necessitate to shift their attention from resilience in terms of categorical preservation of the system’s equilibrium and structure (also referred to as “Engineering Resilience” or “Hard Resilience”), to resilience in terms of gradual systemic adaptation (also referred as “Ecological Resilience” or “Soft Resilience”) (Holling, 1996; Proag, 2014) as well as considering the hysteretic impacts of disruptions and their effects on the system’s development path (Bangwayo-Skeete & Skeete, 2021). The chapter also examines changes in the South Tyrolean accommodation sector’s overall structural composition in terms of their potential connection to the pandemic effects.

The future of agritourism? A review of current trends of touristic commercialisation in rural areas

Tourism in rural areas has enjoyed increasing demand and experienced new forms of
implementation. The expanding quantitative and qualitative development of highquality agritourism establishments in South Tyrol/Italy is an interesting and exemplary case for the commercialisation of rural tourism. For this scope, we analysed the websites of seventeen high-quality agritourism businesses in this region. We studied, how they conduct the commercialisation of agricultural and touristic features and to
what extent offers and services have been commodified. Our findings show in most cases very professionally managed websites that feature high-quality hotel-like facilities. At the same time, they provide significantly less information on farming and related activities. Thus, our results highlight the characteristics of this growing touristic commercialisation of high-quality (commercial) agritourism establishments. Furthermore, we discuss the implications for the objectives of this sector, in which authentic everyday experiences of agriculture and rurality are a crucial feature for the target groups and the perception of farming and the image of the sector.

Contextual Factors of Resilient Tourism Destinations in a Pandemic Situation: Selected Cases from North and South Tyrol during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic

This study examines critical factors for tourism destination resilience in the first year of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in North Tyrol (AT) and South Tyrol (IT). Based on a mixed-method approach, the summer seasons of 2019 and 2020 are compared regarding change in overnight stays in 26 municipalities. The results highlight the importance of the classical 4Ps of marketing and specific contextual factors. These and their implications for research and practice are discussed. Marketing mix aspects most relevant for resilience in a highly tourism-dependent region are outlined.

Geography Matters, But… Evolving Success Factors for Nature-Oriented Health Tourism within Selected Alpine Destinations

This paper analyzes the success factors of health tourism based on natural attractions in
selected European spa and health destinations. The natural resources included in the offers, such as
water, salt, and air, play a central role in this context, as their evidence-based effects have a high
relevance for the health and wellbeing of tourists. Due to its specific geographical location and considering
the threat of climate change, however, this offer is facing increasing challenges which make
adaptation strategies necessary. In addition to a conceptional introduction to the topic, this paper
contains a descriptive analysis of tourism statistics and the results from self-administered questionnaires
with six selected representatives from alpine health destinations (DE, FR, IT, AT, CH, SI). The
results show varying forms of health tourism based on natural attractions, which are also reflected
in online marketing, with potential for optimization. The web research and the responses to the
questionnaire revealed that evidence-based studies hardly play a role in promoting health touristic
offers. Furthermore, climate change effects on natural attractions are considered extremely small
and tend to prompt the development of new offers. Health destinations are advised to generate a
clearer focus on the risks of climate change regarding natural resources.

Water-Sport Tribes in Multi-Sport Destinations: The Case of the Lake Garda, Italy

Lifestyle water-sports share a common escapist aim and were traditionally characterized by very specific—and sometimes closed—community groups. Initially framed within the discourse on adventure tourism, they are increasingly assessed in literature as forms of nature tourism, where the risk-taking attitude is combined with the desire to learn, achieve individual goals, and improve skills. Moreover, water-sports are also suitable to be analysed using the novel theoretical framework of consumer tribes, since they are constituted by heterogeneous groups of persons sharing a common passion and similar social practices, independently of a demographic- or class-based segmentation. The practice of multiple water-sports during one holiday for purposes of multifaceted experiences, the development of multiple water sports practices across a lifetime as well as a the co-existence of multi-optional and singular sporting practices are the main phenomena analysed in this chapter on water-sports neotribes. To analyse these phenomena, this case study focuses on the well-known destination Lake Garda, Italy. Based on semi-structured interviews to local and international stakeholders and a sample survey to local tourists, this work aims at analysing the tribes of water-sport practitioners of the Lake Garda. Results show that water-sport tribes are micro-tribes with blurring boundaries and transient memberships. They develop at destination level embedded in bigger outdoor sports tribes, having a common attitude towards eudaimonic experiences. Multi-sports destinations work both as ‘tribe generators’ and as ‘anchoring places’, because they evolve in a never ending dialogue with tribe members, that in turn improve their skills and challenge themselves in multiple sport adventures.
