Generazione di una interfaccia comune, open source fra le infrastrutture di dati per l'osservazione della Terra e le applicazioni front-end

L’ultima generazione di satelliti per l’osservazione della Terra raccoglie grandi volumi di dati ed informazioni con una capacità senza precedenti. Per analizzare questi set di dati, molti istituti di ricerca ed aziende hanno spostato le loro capacità di elaborazione nei sistemi cloud, che però allo stato attuale risultano ancora basati su soluzioni particolari e definite in base alle specifiche architetture. Questa mancanza di standard non solo rende difficile per gli utenti finali e gli sviluppatori di generare front-end generiche, ma anche di confrontare le diverse offerte per soluzioni cloud. Per risolvere questo aspetto è necessaria una interfaccia comune, che consenta agli utenti finali ed intermedi di porre richieste ai diversi back-end e condurre le elaborazioni in alcuni di questi.

Il progetto openEO, un progetto Horizon 2020 triennale finanziato dalla UE, disegnerà questa interfaccia, che consisterà in tre livelli di Application Programming Interface (API), ossia un API centrale per cercare, accedere ed elaborare grandi set di dati, un driver API per connettere i back-office gestiti dalle industrie europee e mondiali, e un client API per analizzare i set di dati, usando linguaggi come R, Python e JavaScript. Per dimostrare le capacità offerte da questa interfaccia, saranno implementati quattro casi di studio basati principalmente su serie temporali di Sentinel 1 e 2.

Questo progetto supporta la generazione di risorse per uno sfruttamento più efficiente dei dati di osservazione della Terra. EURAC contribuirà all’implementazione dei driver API e gestirà uno dei quattro casi di studio, dedicato al monitoraggio della neve tramite integrazione di dati Sentinel 1 e 3.
